The “Hi-Speed USB Host Controller” is the part of the computer that enables the use of USB 2.0. USB 2.0 offers a huge speed advantage over USB 1.0/1.1, upgrading transfer speed from 12 mbps to 480 mbps. Without the Hi-Speed USB Host Controller installed, a computer will only be able to transfer data at USB 1.0/1.1 speeds even if the ports are USB 2.0.
