The process for converting an image file, such as a JPEG, into a WordPad rich-text format (RTF) or TXT text file is known as OCR, or optical character recognition. Special software identifies the shapes of letters and numbers in the image and converts them into actual text that you can copy, paste and edit. OCR works best with high-quality JPEG images; if your picture is grainy or blurry, it may be harder for the software to recognize every individual character. Many online services will convert your JPEG into an RTF or TXT file for free.
